Performance Specialist

Apply here

The Wallenius Wilhelmsen group is the market leader in roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) shipping and vehicle logistics, managing the distribution of cars, trucks, rolling equipment, and breakbulk to customers all over the world. Wallenius Wilhelmsen is committed to being in the forefront of the green transition and aims to be carbon-neutral already by 2040 (read more about this in our sustainability pledge and the annual report).

The company operates around 125 vessels servicing 15 trade routes across six continents, a global inland distribution network, 66 processing centers, and eight marine terminals.

With the head office in Oslo, Norway, the Wallenius Wilhelmsen group has around 9,500 employees in 28 countries worldwide.

The role will be a part of our Energy Efficiency & Performance and team.

Are you ready to drive performance that moves our fleet toward 2040?

Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims to operate a zero-emission fleet by 2040. To reach this goal, we must understand and improve every factor that affects vessel performance and fuel efficiency. The Performance Specialist plays a key role in this journey, turning data and technical insight into practical actions that make our ships sail smarter and cleaner. Through careful monitoring, analysis, and collaboration with crew, ship managers and external partners, you will help reduce fuel use, lower emissions, and enhance the performance of our global fleet. This is a hands-on role that directly supports our progress toward more sustainable ship operations.

We’re looking for a Performance Specialist who can turn data into measurable improvements and operational excellence. You’ll be the bridge between hydrodynamic theory and real-world fleet performance, working directly with ship crews and managers to implement lasting change.

As biofouling is one of the biggest risks to fleet efficiency, you’ll take ownership of our entire biofouling management strategy, from selecting paint systems and scheduling inspections to coordinating cleanings and evaluating new technologies. Your expertise will ensure our biofouling management remains industry-leading, directly impacting fuel consumption, emissions, and operational costs.

What we´re looking for

  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to turn data into actionable insights
  • Experience using data and digital tools (e.g. Python, SQL, Power BI or similar) to improve operational performance
  • Technical understanding and interest in ship systems, efficiency, and continuous improvement
  • Experience in performance analysis, energy, technology, or other technically oriented industries
  • Ability to translate technical findings into practical operational improvements, together with crews and managers
  • Excellent collaboration skills and cultural awareness, comfortable working across teams, vessels, and nationalities
  • Knowledge of hydrodynamics or vessel performance is an advantage, but not a requirement
  • Curious, data-driven, and eager to contribute to a more efficient and sustainable global fleet

Responsibilities

Performance Monitoring & Optimization:

  • Identify and investigate performance deviations through data analysis and use of performance monitoring tools
  • Drive corrective actions with vessel teams and conduct root-cause analysis
  • Apply hydrodynamic expertise to guide operational decisions

Biofouling Management:

  • Own biofouling management strategy and execution: paint selection, inspection scheduling, cleaning coordination, policy compliance
  • Link hull condition to fuel consumption and speed-power metrics
  • Compare effectiveness of different coatings and maintenance approaches

Technical Development:

  • Build methods to detect efficiency losses across ship systems
  • Develop KPIs, models, and dashboards for proactive management
  • Optimize vendor technology deployment

Change Leadership:

  • Convert analysis into lasting operational improvements
  • Build feedback loops between shore and ship teams
  • Partner with Performance Analyst on reporting and strategic studies

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience within data analysis, engineering, or other performance-related roles
  • Skilled in Python, SQL, or similar analytical tools
  • Experience working with statistical analysis and large operational datasets
  • Ability to apply technical understanding to interpret performance data and identify improvement opportunities
  • Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with diverse stakeholders
  • Knowledge of hydrodynamics or vessel performance is an advantage, but not a requirement
  • Fluent in English, written and spoken

Nice to haves:

  • Experience with biofouling or hull performance optimization
  • Familiarity with Grafana, Power BI, or similar visualization tools
  • Track record in change management or process improvement

What are the three most essential competencies required to succeed in this role?

  1. 1.Hydrodynamic expertise with operational focus - Strong understanding of ship hydrodynamics, hull resistance, and propulsion efficiency with ability to apply these principles to interpret operational data and drive performance improvements

  2. 2.Change management and stakeholder engagement - Ability to drive sustainable behavioral changes and operational improvements through effective engagement with ship managers, crew, and technical stakeholders

  3. 3.Analytical problem-solving with pragmatic approach - Strong technical skills combined with practical mindset to translate theoretical concepts into actionable operational insights and lasting improvements

Benefits

  • Terms and compensation at a competitive level.
  • A great opportunity for development in a global company.
  • Modern office facilities at Lysaker with top-notch in-house canteen with subsidized lunch and available free parking.
  • Sporting and cultural activities (e.g., group training in our gymnasium, running, sailing, kayaking, pilates, football, theatre, concert tickets, etc.)
  • Social events year-round (e.g., wine tasting, cooking classes, yoga, dance, rock-climbing lessons, etc.)
  • Company cabins in Norway and abroad.
  • Premium health and group life insurance, including access to online medical services.
  • A great pension scheme.
  • Paid parental leave and compassionate leave.
  • Flexible working conditions with a hybrid work setup.
